Description

Toyo No Hikari  is a new citrus variety developed by Japanese citrus breeding experts by crossing Kanpei and grapefruit. It inherits Kanpei’s characteristics of high sugar content, crisp texture, and rich flavor, while also taking on grapefruit’s advantages of large fruit size, resistance to cracking, abundant juice without drying, and long tree-holding storage time.

This variety is cold-resistant, tolerating temperatures as low as -7 to -8°C. Single fruit weighs around 500 grams, with larger ones exceeding 750 grams, making it an exceptionally large variety. The fruits are flat and round, with a vibrant, glossy red color when fully ripe, offering an exceptionally appealing appearance. The peel is thin and easy to remove, the segments separate easily, and the flesh is orange-yellow with a fine, tender, and crisp texture. It is highly juicy, melts in the mouth, and has an excellent taste, surpassing Kanpei in flavor.

High sweetness: At the initial ripening stage in late November, the sugar content reaches 15°Brix. By late January to February, when fully ripe, it reaches 16–17°Brix. The fruit can remain on the tree until May, with sugar levels peaking at 18–20°Brix. It does not crack, overcoming Kanpei’s fatal flaw, and does not dry out. With its long tree-holding time, excellent storability, and transportability, Toyo no Hikari significantly boosts its commercial value.
