Description
Caopuzhong, also known as “Jiezhong,” is a variety of longan originally from Chaozhou, Guangdong, specifically from Chao’an. It was selected and cultivated by local farmers from seedling trees and has become a primary and superior variety in the region, especially in eastern Guangdong. This variety is known for its adaptability, high yield, and resistance to fruit cracking. It has a long harvest period, and the fruits can remain on the tree until just before the Mid-Autumn Festival without compromising their quality, making it suitable as a late-ripening fresh fruit variety.
Characteristics:
- Fruit Shape: The fruit is round or slightly oblate and medium-sized.
- Skin: The skin is reddish-brown or yellow-gray-brown with a distinctive turtle-shell-like pattern.
- Flesh: The flesh is waxy white to pale yellowish-white, semi-transparent, and relatively easy to separate from the seed. It is of high quality, with an edible rate of 63.76% and soluble solids content ranging from 18.91% to 19.8%.
- Maturity: The fruit matures from late August to late September, making it a mid-to-late-ripening variety.
- Tree Structure: The tree has a round-headed crown, is vigorous, and has a semi-open growth habit. The leaves are green, with 6-10 leaflets per leaf, mostly 8, and are long-elliptic in shape. The fruit clusters are medium-sized with tightly packed, uniform fruits, each weighing about 9.5 grams. The seed is relatively large, dark brown, and nearly round.
- Other Features: It is one of the four major longan varieties. It is slightly larger and fuller compared to typical longan varieties. Its flesh is waxy white and may appear especially clean, with some having a slightly pale color that looks almost semi-transparent. The tree’s crown tends to be round in shape.
This variety is highly regarded for its quality and is a preferred choice for late-ripening fresh consumption.
