Description
The Soldam Plum is a medium-to-large variety, weighing 80–150 g, with a round, oval, or oblate shape and a subtle, curved apex. A prominent suture line runs along one side of the fruit, while the semi-thin skin is smooth, taut, and covered with a natural powdery blue-grey bloom. This bloom is edible and helps retain moisture in the flesh; in Japanese markets, more bloom indicates greater freshness.
As the fruit matures, the skin transitions from muted yellow-green to dark red, eventually developing maroon and crimson undertones. Beneath the skin, the flesh changes from green-yellow to bright red, with a tender, crisp, and juicy texture surrounding a tightly-adhered tan to light-brown seed.
Soldam plums are edible at nearly any stage. Young, green fruits are slightly springy, tart, and subtly sweet. Fully ripened plums develop a balanced, sweet-tangy flavor, making them highly versatile for fresh eating.
