Description
The fruit ripens in August and September each year. These thumb-sized, oval berries are shiny and black, resembling eyeballs. The local Wa people also refer to them as “ghost eye fruits,” a rather spooky name! What’s even more astonishing is the color of the fruit’s flesh. When you gently rub the fruit in your palm, separating the flesh from the seed, the juice that spills onto your hand is a vivid, striking crimson red that will amaze you. After eating, your lips look as if they are adorned with lipstick, hence the name “Yanzhi fruit” (Rouge fruit).
